I recently had the distinct pleasure of visiting one of my favorite designers, Galina Sobolev, founder of the Single Dress and Kaya di Koko lines, at her factory downtown. Yes, you read this correctly…her factory! All of Galina’s clothes are proudly manufactured not only in the US, but also made locally in LA! I was touched by Galina’s fortitude to stick to her lines being manufactured in LA as it’s a very costly endeavor.
“I’m a first generation immigrant who studied and worked hard to get where I am. I truly think it’s our duty to give back to our community and wonderful state of California and create jobs in our backyard,” said Galina.
Galina is also actively involved in many charities like the Pink Pump Affair, the Mannequins Los Angeles, Aviva Family and Children’s Services, and the Super Saturday sale which supports the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund.
As the designer of Single, Galina creates luxurious garments for independent, stylish and passionate women. Growing up as a young girl in Russia, she learned to sew and crochet from her grandmother, who was an established dressmaker. After modeling on high fashion runways, she pursued her deep love of fashion and cultivated it by studying at the prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City.
Soon thereafter, this creative dynamo started pursuing a career in high-end fashion, creating her own label, Single, with her husband and business partner, Michael. Galina’s line is a luxury collection known for its classic sensibilities and exuberant European fabrics, which promote women’s confidence and independence in style. Enter her world of SINGLE- the world where women are more daring and dynamic, they wear their fashion with excitement and a zest for life, they command attention and shine in the spotlight, and they feel great in their own skin. With this innovative line, Galina celebrates the confidence and strength in every woman. She was also a fashion designer finalist from BRAVO’s “Launch My Line.”
What I love about Galina’s line is that it’s super stylish yet comfortable and it’s great for day to night transitions. Meaning I can go from a nice brunch in the daytime to a red carpet event at night with just a quick change of jewelry and more dramatic makeup! I can’t say that most designers have that versatility.
Gala Collection, the name of her factory is short for her name Galina. And she got the idea for the name of her line from Kraft singles cheese’s slogan, which was “you can’t have just one” and her dresses are so fashionable and appealing, most women can’t resist just having one. So she dropped the s from singles and kept the title and the rest is history!
