Earlier tonight we had the pleasure of having acclaimed TV showrunner Rob Roy Thomas on my witty friend Cameron Datzker’s popular show on LA Talk Radio that I currently guest co-host. Rob is a prominent TV show runner who created Significant Others, the first fully improvised show on American Television as well as others. He is the creator of the “Soft-Scripted” method, which has become very popular and often used in the TV landscape.
I had met Rob years ago, when I auditioned for his much buzzed about pilot D.C. at CBS Radford and was struck by how much he took his time with me in the room (it was an improvised audition) and how he manned the camera himself (showrunners usually have assistants recording auditions and are usually not that hands on in the audition process). I had a blast auditioning for him. The icing on the cake would be to work with him one day, but I digress.
Rob discussed how he came up with the “Soft-Scripted” method, which was a natural progression from his combined experience from reality television and improvised commercials. He also discussed how he creates single camera comedy, cringe humor, scripted and mockumentary style work.
He has directed star caliber talent such as Bryan Cranston, Betty White, Bernie Mac, Jane Kaczmarek, Frankie Muniz, Alfred Molina, Ray Romano, Kevin James, Jerry Stiller, Wanda Sykes, and Steven Weber among others. Rob graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in Radio-Television-Film.
This innovative writer-director has also created, written and directed popular shows such as How to Cheat on Your Wife, Free Ride, and countless other projects.
