As fate would have it, I recently had the good fortune of having a brief, impromptu visit on the FOX lot for an on-set visit to Modern Family, of one of my favorite shows. It wasn’t just a day on the sound stage though…I got to go on location at a quintessential location that is so LA…a shopping mall. Namely, the Century City Mall. I had a blast watching the behind the scenes action of this iconic hit show and learned a lot about makeup from Stephanie Massie, the show’s talented makeup department head. This visit was courtesy of my friend Dr. Pedram Navab, who is quite accomplished in his own right (He’s a doctor, attorney, published author and model).
Stephanie is an amazing makeup artist with a lot of industy experience, having worked on shows involving complicated makeup techniques on the fly, namely Madtv. This journeywoman makeup artist has also worked on hit shows like Brothers and Sisters, Kath & Kim, Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23, 1600 Penn and many others. She has also worked on hit films like What Women Want, Beautiful and Whatever it Takes among others.
I learned so much about how well versed most actresses are with their own makeup application regimens. “Sofia (Vergara) does her own makeup. Mainly as a time saver. So did Sally Field when I worked on Brothers and Sisters. She’d come on set in rollers and with her foundation and could get herself ready. It would save her time and production time as well.”
Ever the expert makeup artist, Stephanie swears by these favorites: Giorgio Armani foundation, Cle de Peau Concealer, Chanteci 16 concealer, Tom Ford lipstick, Nars Everything Blush, and Primer by Terry.
